Three UM athletes gain Smith Award

ORONO – Hockey players Martin Kariya and Gray Shaneberger, along with field hockey standout Jen Johnstone, have been honored by the University of Maine “M” Club with its Dean Smith Awards.

The honor is bestowed annually to the UMaine student-athletes who exhibit exemplary academic achievement, leadership and character. The winners were announced during a Saturday morning ceremony.

Johnstone, a junior from Dallas, Pa., is a secondary education major. She registered a team-high 27 points last season and was named a northeast region All-America as a midfielder.

Kariya, a junior from North Vancouver, British Columbia, is a mathematics major. He is an assistant captain on the Black Bear hockey team and ranks third on the team in points. Last season, he was named to the Verizon CoSIDA District I Academic All-America team.

Shaneberger, a junior from Sewell, N.J., is studying natural resources. Last spring, he became the first Black Bear to be named a Top Scholar-Athlete by Hockey East.

The Smith Award is named for the former UMaine basketball player who in 1990 was recognized as the nation’s top scholar-athlete.

At Presque Isle, Craig Smith racked up 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday as the Owls snuck by the Terriers.

Vjeko Jadric tossed in 18 points and hauled down 14 rebounds for the winners. Tony Garreans added 10 points.

Jimmy Cardaci poured in 27 points to spark Thomas. Nik Ray tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds. Shelby Turcotte scored 15.

Sharrief Sims knocked in 13 for the winners and Albert Whittaker had 12 points and dished out 11 assists. Gary Dussard scored 12.

Bob Deetjen topped the Beavers with 16 points. Tom Nadeau contributed 14, Steve Ginn added 11 and Mike Wilcox notched 10.

Greg Orlicz poured in 16 points for Bowdoin. Danny Ginn tallied 12. Hugh Coleman and Braden Clement contributed 11 each.
