Emblem Club essay contest

BANGOR – The Bangor Emblem Club is holding an essay contest for pupils in grades six, seven and eight attending schools in Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Hermon, Old Town, Orono and Veazie.

The topic is “What Does Your Country Mean to You?” Prizes are $50, $25 and $25. The deadline is March 8. For guidelines, call Joan Glans at 942-3616.

Presidential Scholars Program

Several seniors at area high schools have been named to the 2002 Presidential Scholars Program. They are:

. Kara S. Gaston, Mariaville, John Bapst Memorial High School.

. Michael W. Morris, Winterport, Hampden Academy.

. Matthew H. Tyler, Old Town High School.

. Sarah A. Vereault, Bangor High School.

Scholars are selected on the basis of academic and artistic achievement, leadership qualities, character and involvement in community and school activities.

Maine Principals Scholarships

The Maine Principals Scholarship Program has named 113 Maine students to receive $1,000 scholarships from the MELMAC Education Foundation.

Area recipients are:

. Jana Savage, Bangor High School graduate attending Boston University.

. Lauren Jellison, Brewer High School graduate attending the University of Maine.

. Patricia Rowe, Central High School graduate attending Husson College.

. Laura E. Openshaw, Hampden Academy graduate attending Harvard University.

. Dwayne Judkins, John Bapst Memorial High School graduate attending Maine Maritime Academy.

. Lauren Swett, Old Town High School graduate attending the University of Maine.

. Selena Humphreys, Orono High School graduate attending the University of Maine.

Bentley College

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley College has announced the Dean’s List for the fall semester:

. President’s List, grade-point average of 3.7 or higher, Jonathan Dearborn, Holden. He is a graduate of Brewer High School.

. Dean’s List, grade-point average of 3.3 or higher, Timothy Lo, Bangor. He is a graduate of Bangor High School.

Liberty University

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Joshua F.L. Sargent of Bangor was named to the Dean’s List at Liberty University for the fall semester.

University of Maine

ORONO – University of Maine students Jonathan Donald Chrisos of Brewer and George Pierre Dumont Jr. of Hampden have each been presented with a Geddes Simpson Book Award by the UMaine chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

These awards are given to students who have completed their first year of full-time study at UMaine and have achieved a 4.0 grade point average.

Established at UMaine in 1897 by Marcus Urann, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has grown to more than 280 chapters nationwide and is the oldest national honor society in the United States to recognize scholarly achievement in all academic disciplines.

With support from the Urann Foundation, each year the UMaine chapter of Phi Kappa Phi makes a number of awards to undergraduate and graduate students which recognize academic excellence.

University of Maine students Jodi Dube-O’Neal of Bangor, Knud Hermansen of Old Town, Philip Ruck of Orono and Alina Petrell of Milford have been inducted into the UMaine Chapter of Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering Honor Society.

Chi Epsilon was established in 1922 to recognize qualities of scholarship, character, practicality and sociability in the professional and academic world of civil engineering. Chi Epsilon has more than 120 chapters nationwide.

ORONO – University of Maine students Adam Violette, Deanna Gagner and Andrea Gray of Bangor, Sarah Russell of Brewer, Kristi Millard of Glenburn and Pieter Staples of Orono are active members of the UMaine chapter of Phi Sigma Pi.

Established in 1916, Phi Sigma Pi is a coeducational honor fraternity founded on the principles of scholarship, leadership and fellowship. Nomination requires a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average.

The group is a service-based organization that organizes service, social, fund raising and scholarship events. This year’s events have included participation in the local multiple sclerosis charity walk, holding a Halloween party for children in the pediatrics unit of Eastern Maine Medical Center and collecting items for a Thanksgiving food drive.
