ISLAND FALLS – The annual Island Falls Winterfest, including the famous Log Drivers Cookout, begins today.

Events will get under way with contestants in the snow sculpture contest starting work on their projects at the municipal building grounds. The artwork will be judged at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.

A spaghetti supper will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Big Valley Sno Club on Route 2. That will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by a fireworks display at May Mountain.

A torchlight parade will begin after the fireworks and will travel from the mountain to the public landing at Mattawamkeag Lake, where a bonfire will be lighted.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, the Log Drivers Cookout will be held from noon to 2 p.m. near Rock Crusher Road off snowmobile route Interconnecting Trail System 83. A snowmobile radar run will be held at 2 p.m. at the cookout site.

There will be a snowmobile light parade at 6 p.m. from Bishop’s Market to the municipal building, where there will be an ice-skating party and a bonfire, with free hot dogs and hot cocoa from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

A dance featuring music played by Cobalt Blue will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the municipal building. That will be followed by a breakfast, also at the municipal building.

Events on Sunday, Feb. 17, will begin with a breakfast from 6 to 9 a.m. at the snowmobile clubhouse.

The fishing derby will begin at sunrise and continue until 5 p.m. with fishing on Mattawamkeag and Pleasant lakes. The grand prize for the overall heaviest salmon, trout or bass is a Jiffy ice auger, tag sled and five ice traps.
