Plays of the day

Andrew St. Clair, Maine Central Institute senior, stole the ball from Ellsworth’s John Morse and scored on a fast-break jam with a second left in the first half to electrify the crowd. The jam was the last of three straight baskets by St. Clair as he helped MCI shave a nine-point deficit to six at the half.

Samantha Davis, Shead sophomore, swished a 28-foot 3-pointer from well outside the top of the key with two seconds left in the first half to tie up Saturday’s Class D quarterfinal against Van Buren 31-31.

John Morse, Ellsworth senior guard, shot 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the field for a game-high 22 points.

Bracey Barker, a 6-foot-1 junior point guard for MDI, got involved in all facets of the Trojans’ 45-31 win over Belfast. She jumped center (winning the opening tip), scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds, blocked five shots and handed out five assists.

Michelle Parent, Van Buren junior center, pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds and blocked seven shots in the Crusaders’ Class D quarterfinal win over Shead. She also made six of nine field-goal attempts.

Quotes

“Give Jason [Harvey] all the credit in the world because he played an unbelievable game… Almost to the point where it was kind of fun to watch. It’s tough to say, but you have to give him credit. He knows the game so much better, he’s more than a step ahead of everyone else on the floor. The game is a lot clearer to him than everyone else.” – MCI boys coach Bill Brooks.

“I remember, Lindsay [Burlock] made her two foul shots, and I said, ‘Warm up the bus, baby,’ and I gave her five,” Jessica Cyr of Caribou said, recalling the moment, with 47.9 seconds to play, that she was sure her 9-10 team was going to upset 17-2 Camden Hills.
