Window smashed, cake smeared across car

Police were looking Sunday for the person who smashed the driver’s side window and smeared cake across the top of a car on Hancock Street in Bangor.

The owner of the car reported the incident at 10 a.m. Sunday and gave police the name of a suspect, Officer Chris Blanchard said.

Police had not found the suspect as of Sunday night. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $100.

A Bangor man was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol Saturday night, just weeks after being released on bail for a previous OUI offense, police reported.

Scott Bishop, 29, was pulled over on Hammond Street after police noticed his Ford Explorer traveling erratically, Officer James Deering said.

Bishop failed several field sobriety tests and admitted to having consumed a couple of beers before driving home from work, Deering said. After Bishop refused to take a Breathalyzer test, he was arrested and charged with OUI, operating a vehicle after the suspension of his license and violation of bail.

Investigators at the Bangor Police Department were looking for suspects responsible for several acts of vandalism over the weekend.

The rear tires of a car on Columbia Street were slashed Saturday night after several similar acts of vandalism were reported the night before.

Two or three tires were slashed on each of six vehicles parked on Central, Franklin and Main streets, Sgt. Robert Bishop said. The tires were slashed with what officials believe was a knife.

The only common factor in the acts of vandalism is the vehicles’ location within walking distance of local drinking establishments, Bishop said.

The tires were slashed between 10 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. Anyone who has any information about the vandalism is encouraged to contact Bangor police at 947-7384.

Kerrence G. Zitsch, 41, of Bangor was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol Saturday morning after rolling his car on the Odlin Road.

Zitsch failed to make a right turn in a bend in the road and drove into the oncoming lane before striking a snowbank, Bangor police Officer Robert Hutchins said.

After hitting the snowbank, the vehicle became airborne and rolled onto its hood at the bottom of a 15-foot ditch, Hutchins said.

Police said Zitsch suffered facial injuries and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. At the hospital, the driver admitted to having consumed a “six- to 12-pack,” according to a police report. Zitsch’s accident was “alcohol- and speed-related,” Hutchins said.

Tori Hafford, 24, of Hermon lost control of her vehicle at the same Odlin Road location moments before Zitsch’s accident. Her vehicle slid safely into a snowbank. She was not injured, Hutchins said. Alcohol was not a factor in Hafford’s accident.

A tourist from Pennsylvania had his snowmobiling vacation in Millinocket abruptly ended when his sled was stolen Friday night.

A 2001 Polaris 600, owned by Barry Humber, was stolen out of the back of a Chevy pickup that was parked at the Best Western Heritage Motor Inn, Millinocket police Officer Robert Johansen said.

The red snowmobile with yellow graphics was stolen between 11:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. Saturday. It was driven away from the motel, though the keys were not reported to have been with the sled at the time of the theft, Johansen said. The sled has Pennsylvania dealer plates with number 039.

“There are no leads at this time,” Johansen said. “Normally they don’t go too far. They usually end up at another local establishment or wrecked on the trail.”

Attempts to track the machine ended at a snowmobile trail. The Maine Warden Service investigated the theft. Anyone with any information should contact the Millinocket Police Department at 723-9731.

A Dell Latitude laptop was taken from the second-floor bedroom of a man on Langley Street sometime between Wednesday and Saturday, Bangor police reported.

The laptop, valued at $1,500, and a case for the laptop that was hidden behind a living room sofa were the only items taken. A digital camera, printer and various other valuable items were near the laptop but were left untouched, Bangor police Officer Christopher Morley said.

According to the report, witnesses reported seeing people enter and leave the home during the three days. The front door to the home had been left unlocked.
