Chief justice discusses role of women in courts

When Maine’s first State of the Judiciary speech was given 25 years ago, the woman who one day would become the state’s first female chief justice entered law school.

But things have changed dramatically. Women now constitute 21 percent of Maine’s judgeships, said the first woman – and youngest person – ever to serve as Maine’s chief justice.

With women participating actively in state government, “my presence before you today is most remarkable for the fact that it is really unremarkable,” Saufley said.
