Atlantic salmon subject of Bay of Fundy study

MONCTON, New Brunswick – As inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon stocks have dwindled to only 400 fish in 33 rivers, more resources are going into studying their demise.

Fort Folly First Nations, near Dorchester, has joined with Parks Canada for a three-year recovery program for which the Indian tribe is getting $2.3 million in federal funding.

Twenty-one tribal members will be employed at peak season.

While Fundy Park has a mandate to study the flow of inner bay Atlantic salmon within the park’s two rivers – Upper Salmon River and Point Wolfe River – Fort Folly will tap the park’s resources in terms of scientists and equipment while looking outside the park’s Canada perimeter.

As part of the three-year recovery program, staff will study the environmental conditions in rivers and streams that now or historically contained the spawning grounds of inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon.
