The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Maine Affiliate, has announced grants to help support breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs.
In 1997, the Komen Maine Affiliate was established by a group of women “to make a difference” in Maine. The affiliate has awarded more than $400,000 for education, screening and outreach programs to the underserved and uninsured population in Maine.
Seventy-five percent of the net amount raised by the Maine affiliate remains in Maine. The remaining 25 percent of net is directed to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Research Program.
The Maine programs that will benefit are:
. Caring Connections Program at the Bangor/Brewer YWCA. This program provides books on breast cancer to newly diagnosed women in the Bangor area.
. Western Maine Community Action: Tri-County Health Services, a nonprofit agency providing more than 50 different programs to low-income people in western Maine.
. The Aroostook Medical Center- Women’s Health Center for lymphedema education and therapy. Fish River Rural Health in Eagle Lake to establish a community breast health education program.
. Cary Medical Center in Caribou, to establish a library of print and audio-visual materials about breast cancer.
. The Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Portland, a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers.
