Alton

The Alton Budget Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at the municipal building to discuss money to be raised during the March 30 town meeting. Residents are invited to attend.

Bangor

The Bangor Historical Society will unveil its strategic plan at its annual meeting, to which it invites members and the public. The annual meeting will be held 4:45-6:45 p.m. Feb. 28, in the Lecture Hall of the Bangor Public Library.

The plan, shaped over the past six months, anticipates an expanded role for the organization, expressed in a new name and very specific strategies.

Officials said all were welcome to attend and “be the first to learn about our new statement of purpose and detailed vision.”

Project Goals is offering free, one-on-one computer lessons to library patrons, parents of K-12 students, teachers and librarians. Project Goals teaches basic computer, Internet and e-mail skills, and can work around your schedule. The Bangor Clean Clothes Campaign released its shopping guide last week, billing it as the largest and most detailed anti-sweatshop guide in the nation. The release of the guide was part of a special Valentine’s Day event held at the Union Street Brick Church. More than a dozen local retailers, high school students and local consumers participated in the event, which featured a play, songs and products made with dignity.

The guide lists companies that do not use sweatshop labor in the manufacture of their products. For information about its availability, contact PICA at 947-4203. The Bangor Clean Clothes Campaign is a partnership among the city of Bangor, more than 30 local retailers, and consumers to help end sweatshop labor.

On Feb. 15, the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation hosted a grant-writing workshop in conjunction with the Maine Philanthropy Center, “Preparing Successful Proposals: An Introduction to Grantwriting.”

The workshop was held at the G. Clifton Eames Learning Center. This workshop is one of many community workshops the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation has sponsored at the Learning Center for the Greater Bangor community.

The workshop presenter was David Steven Rappoport, founder and principal of Development Solutions. Rappoport is a Maine consultant responsible for raising more than $10 million dollars in grant funds for Maine nonprofits.

His background includes directing a community-based medical research organization and an arts education program. He holds a master’s degree from Goddard College, and his career includes fund raising, hospital administration and public relations consulting. He serves on the boards of Maine Initiatives and the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance.

Participants in the workshop included representatives of local Maine social service and philanthropic groups and were guided through the most common components of a formal grant to private or corporate foundations.

At Eastern Maine Medical Center, registered nurses Janet Groshon, Paula Spacco and Dina Cole passed the certification exam for certified post-anesthesia nurses.

Facilities manager Jeff Mylen, a professional engineer, has been certified as an energy manager by the Association of Energy Engineers.

Deborah Sanford, registered nurse, has been named patient care administrator for imaging services, the sleep lab, vascular lab, neurophysiology lab and transport services.

Roger Boudreau of sterile processing and distribution won the 2001 Perfect Attendance Award, including a $500 savings bond.

Brewer

Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby has a limited number of openings for this summer’s Soap Box Derby Race, to be held in Brewer on Saturday, June 8.

Boys and girls ages 9-16 as of Aug. 1 of this racing year are eligible to participate in two divisions of racing, stock or super-stock. To register, participants must provide a copy of their birth certificate, a nonrefundable $20 registration fee and a race registration form.

Registrations are accepted at the Brewer Parks and Recreation Department, located in the Brewer

Auditorium, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until filled. Participants should register soon to be sure they have time to order and construct their racecar.

Brewer Police Officer Roger Hershey the department’s community service officer of the year for 2001, received his corporal badge during the Feb. 12 City Council meeting.

At the same meeting, members of the police force, received individual certificates recognizing the departments accomplishments over the past year.

Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Herb Hopkins recently inducted two new members into the Brewer Kiwanis Club. Newly elected members are:

. Kathleen Harding-Heber, marketing manager for Days’ Jewelry Stores.

The annual Game Banquet sponsored by the University of Maine Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Penobscot County Conservation Association clubhouse on Route 9 in Brewer. The menu will include partridge dumplings and stew, fish chowder, moose chili, deer steak, beaver stew and more. Tickets are $7 each, or $4 for those who donate game. Carmel

The town of Carmel will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the town office on junkyard license and salvage renewals for: Ronald Jarvis III, Route 2; Paul Falkenburg, Irish Road; Galen Wheaton, Route 2; Donald Smith Sr., Hampden Road; Jeremy Pomeroy, Irish Road; and Laurie Mayhew, Fuller Road.

Eddington

The town of Eddington will hold elections March 18 at the municipal building, with the town meeting to follow March 19 at Eddington School.

Selectman terms are expiring for Joan Brooks and Donn C. Goodwin, both of whom are seeking re-election. There are three candidates for the unexpired term of Lawrence Kirouac, who moved to Ohio: James Hancock, Diane Rimm and James White.

In addition, the town is accepting nomination petitions to fill the one year left on the term of Timothy Campbell. Petitions must be turned in by the end of the business day, Feb. 22.

Claude Berthiaume is running for re-election on the SAD 63 board. Doug Castiglia is running for the remaining two years of the seat to which selectmen appointed him last year. The term of Kathy Fox is expiring this year, as well.

Hampden

The Maine State Grange is seeking residents in the Hampden area to reactivate Eastern Star Grange No. 1.

Those interested can become a part of America’s foremost volunteer and grassroots organization. The Grange comprises families and individuals who share a common interest in community involvement and rural issues. They all work together in a family environment.

Programs, projects and activities offered in every local Grange reflect the interests and talents of its members with special focus on family activities.

Hermon

Stephen Tuckerman will resign as town manager effective June 30. Tuckerman will be moving to Pennsylvania with his physician wife, who has obtained a position there. Town Council Chairman Louis “Buzzy” LaChance said the town would undertake a search process to find a replacement for Tuckerman.

Old Town
