Game highs

Hannah Socoby, Houlton senior guard, scored 21 points to lead the Shiretowners in an upset of previously undefeated Winslow. She went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Tyler Warren, Camden Hills senior guard-forward, scored 26 points before fouling out with 51 seconds left and led the Windjammers to a regional Class B semifinal victory over Caribou.

Ashley Ames, Dexter High School’s freshman center, made her Bangor Auditorium debut a memorable one with 23 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocked shots in a 61-39 win over Stearns of Millinocket in their Eastern Class C quarterfinal.

Plays of the day

During the second quarter of the George Stevens-Schenck boys quarterfinal, Seth Johnston, the Wolverines high scorer in the game, drove through the lane for an apparent easy layup. The Eagles’ 6-foot-8 center, Ryan Hutchins, suddenly appeared on the scene and swatted the ball out to the top of the circle. Hutchins’ presence in the lane was one reason the Wolverines connected on only four of 24 shots from the floor in the second half and 14 of 52 for the game.

Noteworthy statistics

Kyle Mercer, Bucksport senior guard, came off the bench to shoot 75 percent from 3-point range on 6-for-8 shooting to help lead the Bucks to a Class B semifinal victory.

The Houlton girls hit 17 of their 21 free-throw attempts, including 11 of 13 fourth-quarter tries in a win over Winslow.

Quotes

“They came out and ran the diamond-and-one to guard Jason [Harvey], so coach told me to just shoot 3’s and then they’d have to come out on us. They never did so I just kept shooting.” ? Bucksport guard Kyle Mercer, who scored a game-high 21 points off the bench.
