OLD TOWN – A disciplined offense, featuring 23 points from junior guard Mark Reed, carried the Bangor Rams to a 50-44 victory over previously unbeaten Old Town in a Big East Conference basketball showdown at MacKenzie Gym Thursday night.

Old Town, the defending state champions, finishes the season at 17-1. The Indians’ 29-game winning streak was snapped, as well as its 26-game mark at MacKenzie Gym.

BANGOR – Everybody loves a front runner and Thursday night nearly 500 people crowded elbow to elbow into Momma Baldacci’s in Bangor to give Paul Tsongas an enthusiastic reception.

“The caucus here is really important,” said Tsongas, a former Massachusetts senator. “We’ve got this momentum.” People cheered heartily and at length.

25 years ago – Feb. 21, 1977

OLD TOWN – The second winter session of adult programs at the Old Town-Orono YMCA will begin the week of Feb. 28.

To begin the new session, golf instruction for beginners and intermediates will be offered. The beginners’ class will be held Tuesday evenings 7-8 p.m. Instruction will include learning and practicing the four basic techniques of grip, stance, take-away and follow through.

ORONO – The annual church conference of the Orono United Methodist Church was held at the church vestry on Feb. 16

The presiding official at the conference was the Rev. Howard E. Benson, district superintendent for the Northern District of the United Methodist Church.

50 years ago – Feb. 21, 1952

HERMON – The Hermon Extension group met at the parish house recently with 14 members present. The meeting was in charge of Mrs. Rena Gray, HDA assistant. Subject of the meeting was “Best Health Buys for Food Dollar.”

The dinner committee, Mrs. Madeline Leathers and Mrs. Pearl Reardon, with all other members assisting under the supervision of Mrs. Gray, prepared the dinner in 20 minutes.

ORONO – The senior classes and facilities of Orono and Old Town high schools have named senior girls in the two schools as recipients of the Esther Eayres Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award.

They are Miss Eleanor Dow, daughter of Mrs. Katherine Dow and the late Neal S. Dow of Old Town, and Miss Phillis Gould, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Gould of Bangor.

100 years ago – Feb. 21, 1902

BUCKSPORT – A large party of the real people went to Alamoosook on Wednesday night to assist in the dedicatory ceremony of the fine new cottage recently completed by Mel Gray and Davis Clay. The cottage is one of the best finished and most commodious on the pond and is located near the “Indian Pond.”

A “baked owl” supper and entertainment under the auspices of the ladies of the First Parish church was held in the vestries of the church on Thursday night.

Miss Mabel Ames gave the piano solo. Mrs. H.S. Rowe gave the reading of an original poem, “How They Baked the Owl.” Henry F. Whitman sang the song, “The Owl.”

OLD TOWN – The new filters for the city waterworks are on the road and will arrive in a day or two and be put into position immediately. Work upon the standpipe will be commenced at once, and contracts have been signed calling for the completion of the work by May 1.
