BAR HARBOR – An elderly couple who became lost Wednesday while traveling from Old Town to Mount Desert Island were found early Thursday morning, out of gas on Interstate 95 near Kittery, Bar Harbor police said Thursday.

State police found the two Bar Harbor residents, a 90-year-old man and his 93-year-old wife, about 2 a.m.

Neither was injured or ill, police said.

The couple last was seen in Bangor about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, when they asked police how to reach Ellsworth. They had been following their daughter in a separate vehicle when the two vehicles became separated in traffic.

Family members became concerned when the couple never arrived at their Bar Harbor home, and reported the disappearance to police.

Police in several counties were on the lookout Wednesday night for the couple’s tan Mercedes. A state trooper recognized the disabled vehicle on the roadside and provided assistance.

Police did not know Thursday whether the trip to Kittery was intentional or accidental.

The couple returned home Thursday.
