NEWRY – The girls and boys teams from Madawaska both posted impressive victories after one day of competition in the boys and girls state Class C skiing championships at the Sunday River Ski Resort.

Both teams notched state titles in the giant slalom

On the girls’ side, a 1-2-5 finish from Rosa Londono (1:36.35), Danielle Daigle (1:42.91), and Kassie Levesque (1:49.15) keyed the Owls’ 22-point finish. Other top skiers include Sacopee Valley of South Hiram’s Barbara Wadsworth (1:43.32) and Jay’s Rachel Gagnon (1:45.94).

Freeport currently holds second with 44 points. Winthrop’s 81, Jay’s 82 and Livermore Falls’ 90 rounds out the top five.

On the boys side, the Owls’ Jeff Ayotte (1:33.10) beat out Alex Harold of Freeport (1:38.30), and Madawaska is currently leading the Falcons 24-25 in team competition. Carrabec of North Anson (39), Lee Academy (93), and Livermore Falls (107) round out the top five.

Class A

Presque Isle 71, Nokomis 63

At the Newman Gym on the Husson College campus in Bangor, Ryan Graves scored all 18 of his points in the second half and Presque Isle erased a 12-point third-quarter deficit by outscoring Nokomis 36-16 over the game’s final 12-plus minutes.

Graves had eight third-quarter points and 10 in the final period.

Fred Bird finished with 20 points, Nick Casavant scored 17 and Matt Fortin had eight points.

Ryan McLellan’s game-high 28 points paced Nokomis. Lucas Hayden had 13, Trenton Estes scored 12 and Arnie Ellis contributed eight points.

At Husson College’s Newman Gym in Bangor, Megan Magoon hit a 10-foot base line jumper off an inbounds pass from Lena Caron with 1.2 seconds left in overtime to give Hampden Academy the Big East girls championship.

Magoon finished with a game-high 16 points including 10 in the fourth quarter. Emmy Russell chipped in 10 points, four steals and three blocked shots.

Danielle Clark and Gillian Snow had 13 points apiece for Nokomis and Michelle Murray had 11.
