NEWRY – The girls and boys teams from Madawaska both posted impressive victories after one day of competition in the state Class C skiing championships at the Sunday River Ski Resort Thursday.
Both teams notched state titles in the giant slalom
On the girls’ side, a 1-2-5 finish from Rosa Londono (1:36.35), Danielle Daigle (1:42.91), and Kassie Levesque (1:49.15) keyed the Owls’ 22-point finish. Other top skiers include Sacopee Valley of South Hiram’s Barbara Wadsworth (1:43.32) and Jay’s Rachel Gagnon (1:45.94).
Freeport currently holds second with 44 points. Winthrop’s 81, Jay’s 82 and Livermore Falls’ 90 rounds out the top five.
On the boys side, the Owls’ Jeff Ayotte (1:33.10) beat out Alex Harold of Freeport (1:38.30), and Madawaska is currently leading the Falcons 24-25 in team competition. Carrabec of North Anson (39), Lee Academy (93), and Livermore Falls (107) round out the top five.
Joining Harold and Ayotte in the top five on the day were Jay’s Phillip Gagnon (1:38.54), Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln’s Brian Dupuis (1:38.72), and Matt Lavertu of Madawaska (1:40.78).
Competition will continue over the next two days at Sunday River.

At the Augusta Civic Center, Lyndsay Clark poured in 20 points as the Cougars dashed out to a 14-3 first quarter lead en route to the semifinal win.
Alexa Kaubris chipped in with 12 for Dirigo of Dixfield and Sheena Weston added 10.
Jillian Manzer led the Cobras of North Anson with 13.

Indira Gowell added 10 points for the winners.

Reporting games
Guidelines for coaches
During the busy high school season, the NEWS asks that managers and coaches for the home teams promptly report the games. Games can be reported starting at 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Games can not be reported on Saturday.
Those seeking to report games from the Greater Bangor area may call at 990-8275. Those outside the Bangor area may call toll free at 1-800-310-8600. Game results will also be accepted through the fax machine. Its number is 990-8092.
Coaches and managers are urged to provide details for both teams when reporting games. First names of players on both teams as well as statistics are needed. Those not providing full details for both teams run the risk of the games not being published in the paper.
