BOSTON – The University of Maine Black Bears struck first but couldn’t recover from five unanswered goals as Boston College rolled to a 5-2 women’s hockey win Friday.

Karen Droog gave Maine the 1-0 advantage in the first period off a Tracy Caridade assist. Boston College responded with five goals over the first and second periods from Kelly McManus, Jaclyn Kryzak, and Missy Barsz. McManus was responsible for three of the Eagles’ goals. Tristan Desmet added the last goal of the game for Maine in the third period on a Naomi Smethurst assist.

The loss dropped Maine’s overall record to 14-14-3, while the Eagles moved to 8-16-4.

Rybalko wins long jump

At Medford, Mass., the University of Maine’s only competitor in the Women’s All-New England Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday took first place in the long-jump.

Viktoriya Rybalko, a junior at the University of Maine, placed first in the long jump with a distance of 5.80 meters. University of Massachusetts at Lowell’s Jill Croft placed second with 5.77 meters.

The Black Bears are in ninth place at the championships being held at the Gantcher Center on the Tufts University Campus with a team score of 13 points.

Rybalko, a native of Zaporzhye, Ukraine, was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for her performance last weekend.
