EDDINGTON – The ballot for next month’s local elections was finished Friday. This year, voters will fill seven local offices, four of them on the town’s five-member board of selectmen.
Though the deadline for nomination petitions for six of the positions was Jan. 31, an additional position opened up when Selectmen Timothy Campbell tendered his resignation effective after the March town meeting.
Because the timing of Campbell’s resignation did not allow potential candidates enough time to comply with the town’s usual nomination time frame, selectmen decided to employ a state law allowing for an accelerated process. Eligible residents had until the end of the business day Friday to submit nomination petitions for the remaining year of Campbell’s term.
On Friday, Town Manager Pamela Violette said that Marie M. Baillargeon and Charles C. Grover Jr. have stepped forward as candidates and that their names will appear on the March local election ballot.
Other selectmen seats to be filled are the expiring three-year posts now held by Joan Brooks and Donn C. Goodwin, both of whom are unopposed for re-election, and the remaining two years of Lawrence J. Kirouac’s unexpired term. Candidates for the position Kirouac left when he moved to Ohio are James Hancock, Diane Rimm and James White.
On the education side of the ballot, Claude Berthiaume is unchallenged for re-election to the SAD 63 board. Kathy Fox, whose term also expires this year, has opted not to run and no one has stepped forward as a candidate. Local officials hope to fill that post through a write-in election next month. Doug Castiglia is running for the remaining two years of the post to which selectmen appointed him last year, after a write-in election failed to fill it.
Town elections are set for Monday, March 18. The polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the municipal building. The annual town meeting will be held at 7 p.m. the next day in the Eddington School gymnasium.
