Outlook: A win could give the Bears at least a share of third place or at best a tie for second in the conference standings. UMaine is looking for its fifth win in six games, while BU is riding a three-game win streak having won four of five. The Bears are 7-3 at Alfond this season UMaine must rebound well against the Terriers, who boast a well-balanced offense led by the versatile Terhune. The league’s leading scorer has a knack for getting to the foul line (83 percent), but can step out and shoot the 3-pointer. UMaine also must attack BU’s matchup zone defense rather than settle for long shots from the perimeter. The Bears need to take care of the ball on offense as the Terriers have forced a league-high 23.5 turnovers.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Maine vs. Boston University
Time, site: 1 p.m. Sunday, Case Gymnasium, Boston
Records: Maine 10-16 (7-8 America East), Boston U. 18-9 (12-3)
Series, last meeting: BU leads 39-36; BU won 61-59 on Feb. 8
Key players: Maine – 6-3 G Errick Greene (17.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg), 7-0 C Justin Rowe (13.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 4.27 bpg), 6-2 G Derrick Jackson (7.8 ppg, 2.9 rpg), 6-4 F Rickey White (8.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg), 6-6 F Joe Campbell (7.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg); Boston U. – 6-0 G Chaz Carr (13.5 ppg, 2.3 rpg), 6-7 G/F Billy Collins (12.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg), 6-8 F Ryan Butt (7.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg) 6-6 F Jason Grochowalski (7.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg), 6-2 G Kevin Fitzgerald (3.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg)
Outlook: The teams enter this contest with different motivations: BU is trying to hold onto first place in the league, while the Bears are locked into fifth and are trying to build some momentum for the postseason tourney. Grochowalski was the star against Maine in Orono, scoring 20 points. The Terriers have more weapons than most conference foes, and their subs routinely generate more output than their opponent’s bench players do. More than half of BU’s points in the previous meeting were scored by non-starters. Maine held Carr to seven points in that one, but he’s an explosive player who is a likely all-rookie pick. BU will try to negate Rowe’s shot-blocking by taking the ball to the rim instead of settling for short jump shots that the 7-footer can time.
