Husson, Saint Joseph’s meet in MAC men’s final Monks, Beavers square off in women’s title game

AUGUSTA – Top-seeded Husson of Bangor cruised to an men’s basketball 82-62 victory over No. 4 UMaine-Machias and No. 2 Saint Joseph’s of Standish downed No. 3 UM-Fort Kent 68-55 in Sunday’s semifinals of the Maine Athletic Conference tournament at the Augusta Civic Center.

Husson and Saint Joseph’s play for the championship today at 7:30 p.m.

Robert Pilsbury and Randy Fletcher netted 22 and 21 points, respectively, to key the Husson win. Ryan Rivera added 11 points and Fletcher grabbed 12 rebounds.

For the Clippers, Gary Dussard tallied 16 points, Sharrief Sims recorded 13 and Wayne Clarke had 10.

In the first game, C.J. Vose poured in 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lift Saint Joseph’s.

Brandon Stewart added 11 points and nine rebounds while Bilal Dawan-Abdullah notched nine points and 11 rebounds.

For the Bengals, Kenyon Glover recorded 24 points and nine rebounds and Andrew Clavette scored 10 points.

Husson’s Pilsbury earned the nod as the MAC Men’s Player of the Year and Braves boss Warren Caruso was the Coach of the Year. Bob Deetjen of UMF was named the Rookie of the Year.

Joining Pilsbury on the All-MAC first team are teammate Randy Fletcher, Bilal Dawan-Abdullah and C.J. Vose of Saint Joseph’s, and Tom Nadeau of UMF.

The second team includes Quinson Lancaster of Husson, Morris Young of UMFK, UMM’s Albert Whittaker, Jimmy Cardaci of Thomas and UMF’s Mike Wilcox.

Lasell tops MMA for NAC title

At Newton, Mass., Sunday, Lasell College of Auburndale, Mass., topped Maine Maritime Academy 69-64 to capture the North Atlantic Conference championship.

Saturday, Lasell defeated Elms College of Chicopee, Mass., 71-50 and Maine Maritime downed Mount Ida of Newton Center, Mass., 71-65 in Saturday’s semifinals.

In Sunday’s game, Demitrius DeJesus pumped in 22 points to pace Lasell.

For the Mariners, Matt Clement tossed in 18 points, Jed Johnson scored 13 and Corey Streams chipped in with 10.

In Saturday’s game, John Newland poured in 20 points and hit a key 3-pointer with a minute remaining to lift Maine Maritime over Mount Ida. Johnson contributed 16 points and Streams put in 15.

Josh Diddick paced Mount Ida with 18 points.

Dwayne Okantey of Lasell was named tournament MVP. Johnson and Streams of Maine Maritime, DeJesus of Lasell, Diddick of Mount Ida and Damien Bradley of Elms were selected for the all-tournament team.

Women’s basketball

St. Joe’s, UMF advance to MAC finals

At the Augusta Civic Center Sunday, top-ranked Saint Joseph’s of Standish defeated UM-Presque Isle 88-68 and No. 3 UM-Farmington topped No. 2 Thomas of Waterville 66-56 in the semifinals of the Maine Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament.

Saint Joseph’s and UM-Farmington play today at 5:30 for the tournament championship.

Saint Joseph’s put five players in double figures en route to its victory. Sue Picard led the way with 21, Stacey Gelinas scored 16, Tara Gagnon recorded 13, Laura Pelkey notched 11 and Abbie Rice tossed in 10.

Rachel Larlee paced the Owls with 17 points while Heather Noonan and Erica McGary netted 15 and 12, respectively.

In the first game, freshman Kate LaHaye scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Beavers to the victory.

Jocelyn Sawyer provided 13 points and nine rebounds for UMaine-Farmington, while Rachel Bard added 13 points and five assists.

Tonya Cray led Thomas with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Erin Lovely added 12 points and seven rebounds. Kati Morrell grabbed 10 boards.

The MAC also has announced its all-conference selections. Stacey Gelinas of Saint Joseph’s College in Standish was named the MAC Women’s Player of the Year.

Sara Ricker of UM-Machias earned the nod as the Rookie of the Year, while Thomas’ Chris Aube was named the Coach of the Year.

Sue Picard of Saint Joseph’s also earned a spot on the All-MAC first team along with Sawyer of UMF, Lovely of Thomas and UM-Presque Isle’s Rachel Larlee.

The second team includes Leslie Trott and Liz Boone of Husson College in Bangor, Megan Woodcock and Bard of UMF and Abbie Rice of Saint Joseph’s.

Huskies win Little East tournament

At Gorham Saturday, Meg Cressler tossed in a career high 24 points to pace Southern Maine to a 73-61 triumph over Eastern Connecticut State in the championship game of the Little East Conference tournament. The Huskies captured their sixth straight conference title and secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III tournament.

Nikki Allen contributed 12 points, Jess Libby notched 11 points and Kara Crockett tallied 10 points for Southern Maine.

Allison Coleman sparked Eastern Connecticut with 23 points.

Cressler was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Bowdoin claims NESCAC title

At Brunswick Sunday, Bowdoin earned its second straight New England Small College Athletic Conference title and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a 68-57 win over Middlebury (Vt.) in the championship game.

Bowdoin advanced to the championship with a 56-40 win over Williams (Mass.) Saturday. Middlebury defeated Bates 61-56 to reach the final.

In Sunday’s game, Kristi Royer poured in 19 points to lead the Polar Bears. Lora Trenkle aided the cause with 15 and Jessie Mayol tossed in 11.

For Middlebury, Kristin Hanley netted 15 and Megan McCosker tallied 14.

In Saturday’s game, Mayol paced Bowdoin with 13 points. Trenkle added 11 and Royer contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

For Williams, Kerri McMahon scored 12 and Amy Geant tossed in 10.

At Chicopee, Mass., Saturday, Kate Lawler racked up 21 points and nine rebounds to propel Maine Maritime by Lasell College of Newton, Mass. The Mariners advanced to the championship game of the North Atlantic Conference tournament against Elms College of Chicopee, a 77-63 winner over Lesley University of Cambridge, Mass.

Rachel Merrill added 14 points and Jessica Sawyer garnered 12 for the winners.

Stacey George led the Lasers with 13 points.

Track and Field

Rybalko wins triple jump

The University of Maine finished 10th at the All-New England Championships at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., Friday and Saturday.

The University of Connecticut won the 32-team meet with 183 points, 79 better than runner-up Northeastern.

UMaine junior Viktoriya Rybalko of Zaporzhye, Ukraine, provided 20 of Maine’s 27 points by finishing first in the long jump with a distance of 5.8 meters and the triple jump with a length of 12.70 meters – just .07 meters off the meet record.

The Black Bears’ 800 meter relay team of Silvia Scaldaferri, Brooke DeForte, Sarah LaPerle and Rybalko ran a time of 1 minute, 44.79 seconds for a sixth-place finish. Scaldaferri also finished eighth in the 200 with a time of 26.31.

The UMaine men finished tied for 25th as Joey Luchini of Ellsworth was the lone point producer with a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:33.35.

Women’s hockey

Maine 5, Boston College 3

At Chestnut Hill, Mass., Saturday, Meagan Aarts and Jamie Hill notched two goals apiece to lead Maine to the win. The Black Bears earned a split of the season series.

Karen Droog added a goal and an assist as Maine improved to 15-14-3. Kelly Nelson, Naomi Smethurst, Nicole Munro and Tristan Desmet contributed an assist each. Lara Smart stopped 29 of 32 shots.

For 8-17-4 Boston College, Kerri Sanders scored a pair of goals and Kelly McManus had a goal and an assist. Lisa Davis registered 28 saves on 33 shots.
