It was clear that Eastern Maine girls all-tourney voters had a hard time picking just one player per class for the 2002 Bangor Daily News’ Owen Osborne Most Valuable Player award after last week’s regional tournament for Classes B, C and D.

At least two players from each title team received MVP votes. None of this year’s choices were unanimous.

But in the end, the voters went with the overall team leaders, including senior Lanna Martin of Class C Calais, the first three-time winner of the MVP award.

Woodland senior Ashley Marble was named the MVP of the Class D tournament, her second Osborne honor, and junior Bracey Barker of MDI picked up the Class B MVP award, making her the second Trojan player in a row to win it.

The MVP award was established in 1994 in memory of Osborne, a former NEWS sports editor and reporter. The award and all-tourney teams, which are listed below by classification, are selected by a vote of media, tourney officials and representatives of the Maine Principals’ Association.

CLASS B – Barker, a 6-foot-1 point guard, had some of the most well-rounded stats: 9.3 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and 5.3 assists per game. An honorable mention last year, Barker had her best game stats-wise in the quarterfinals with 12 points, six rebounds, five blocks and five assists.

MDI junior Shelley Gott returns for her second year on the all-tourney team. The 5-8 guard averaged a team-high 15 points per game to go along with 7.3 rpg. She was the key in MDI’s title-game win with 14 points in the second half.

Two Houlton seniors make their first all-tourney appearances.

Hannah Socoby averaged 11.3 ppg (she scored 21 in the semifinal). The 5-4 guard also averaged nine rpg, and was spectacular from the free-throw line, going 18-for-20. Socoby played in the quarterfinal despite pain from a foot injury.

Shiretowner Sarah Beasley was spectacular in the quarterfinal, scoring 31 points. She didn’t quite keep up that pace, but the 5-10 forward still averaged 17.3 points per contest and was the team’s leading rebounder at 9.6 per game.

Senior Jessica Cyr is the first Caribou girl since 1995 to be named to an all-tourney team. The 5-8 guard led the Vikes to the semifinals with an average of 12 points per game.

Class C – Martin won the MVP award her freshman, junior, and now senior years. She was an honorable mention as a sophomore.

This year her well-rounded numbers included 15 points, six rebounds, 3.6 assists and 5.3 steals a game for three games.

Katie Frost of Calais, a 5-8 senior guard-forward, had her best game in the final when she went 4-for-5 from 3-point range. She averaged 16 points and 5.6 rebounds, and was 18-for-30 from the floor in three games. Frost was an all-tourney player as a sophomore.

Penquis of Milo teammates Megan Russell and Lindsay Hamlin had excellent senior tournaments.

Russell, a 5-7 point guard, is making her third all-tourney appearance. She scored 13 ppg and logged three assists per game and hit a key 3-pointer late in the semifinal against Dexter, but injured her foot and played almost the entire final game hurt.

Five-foot-6 guard Hamlin averaged 10 points and made the winning free throw in the Patriots’ semifinal.

Dexter freshman Ashley Ames came through in her first tournament. The 6-3 center scored 21 ppg and added 14 rpg and four blocks per game in two contests.

Class D – Marble and Woodland teammate Julia Knights were named to their fourth all-tourney team (the Dragons were Class C in 1999).

Marble, a 5-10 guard, was as electrifying as ever. She racked up 57 points for a 19 ppg average, and averaged six rpg and four steals per game.

Knights, a 5-11 forward, was a tough inside presence. She averaged 18.6 ppg and eight rpg.

Lee senior Deidra Ham and freshman Shelby Pickering earned their first all-tourney honors.

Five-foot-5 point guard Ham put in 11 ppg and handed out 7.3 apg.

Pickering, a 5-10 forward, had a stellar debut, and one of the more consistent scoring efforts. She racked up 65 points, the most in the three-class tournament, which is an average of 21.6 ppg. She also grabbed 12.6 rpg.

Van Buren 5-8 guard Nicole Corbin ended her stellar career with her first all-tourney appearance and a 26.5 ppg average through two games, the highest among the all-tourney team members.
