Youths moved to new facility in Charleston

CHARLESTON – A new correctional facility designed to house juveniles from 10 Maine counties has officially opened.

Thirty-seven juveniles were transferred last week from the former Maine Youth Center in South Portland to the new Mountain View Youth Development Center.

Eric Hansen, superintendent of the Charleston facility, said the transfers were carried out without incident over a three-day period.

The move capped an effort by the state Department of Corrections to provide two full-service juvenile facilities for detained and committed juveniles. The former Maine Youth Center, now called Long Creek Youth Development Center, serves juveniles from the six southernmost counties.
