CHCS urges people to consider becoming foster parents

The early stages of a new year are a time of reflection and a time for looking toward the future.

In many respects, the future rests with our children. But each year children are removed from their homes after being exposed to neglect, abuse and trauma.

The need for caring people to become foster parents in Penobscot County and throughout Maine increases each year.

Are you someone who can bring positive change to the life of a child? Are you that special person considering the rewarding career of foster parenting?

Community Health and Counseling Services is dedicated to providing the highest quality of community-based services to children, adolescents and their families.

Among its primary children’s programs is Treatment Foster Care, which serves children whose needs cannot be met in the more traditional foster home setting. TFC is a team-oriented program, with foster parents an integral part of a team. Together, team members build upon the unique abilities of each family and child while finding ways to overcome challenges that each child may face.

CHCS Treatment Foster Care services include intensive case management, therapy and psychosocial rehabilitation services. CHCS is there, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist and provide support.

To become a CHCS foster parent, you must complete a CHCS application procedure and a state licensing packet. CHCS foster home developers will assist you through the process.

The CHCS application process includes interviews with a foster home developer and preservice training related to foster parenting.

The state licensing process involves interviews with a licensing worker, background checks and an inspection of the home to ensure that it meets licensing standards with regard to such issues as water quality and fire safety.

If you are ready to make a positive difference in the life of the child, there is no time like the present. In the new year, you can help give a child a new start.

CHCS held a recent informational meeting for people interested in foster parenting at its northern Penobscot County Children’s Services office in Lincoln.
