PRESQUE ISLE – Farmers enrolled in the Farm Service Agency’s 2000 Crop Disaster Program are reminded to purchase crop insurance for those insurable crops on their farms that received disaster assistance.
The final date for applying for crop insurance on most spring-planted crops in Maine is March 15. Insurance crops vary from county to county. Aroostook County farmers can insure barley, corn, peas, oats and potatoes.
March 15 also is the last day to make policy changes for the new crop year.
Growers are strongly advised by the Aroostook County Farm Service Agency to contact a crop insurance professional as soon as possible for details. A list of agents is available at www.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents/. Producers also may contact the Raleigh Regional Office of the Risk Management Agency at (917) 875-4880 for further information. Information also is available at the FSA offices in Fort Kent, 834-3831; Presque Isle, 764-4151; and Houlton, 532-9407.
