BREWER – A Massachusetts man who claimed he was working for the CIA and hunting terrorists was arrested by police Friday after it was determined he was intoxicated as he drove from business to business on his mission.

Brewer police charged Clive MacDonald, 40, of Dorchester with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and with disorderly conduct. Authorities were first called to R.D. Faulkner Corp. on Parkway South at 5:45 p.m. when employees reported that a man was banging on their door trying to get in under the pretenses that he was a federal agent looking for Muslims and terrorists.

MacDonald left before police arrived, said Cpl. Keith Emery who was then called to the Stable Inn where a similar incident had unfolded. MacDonald was gone again, but employees gave police a description of MacDonald and his car, which Emery located at the Brewer Motor Inn.

Refused a room at the motel, MacDonald was inside the bar taking a sip from an otherwise full drink, the only drink the bar served MacDonald, according to police. The Massachusetts man denied drinking before entering the bar, although his glassy eyes, unsteadiness and the alcohol on his breath suggested to police that he had had more than just a sip. A partially consumed bottle of wine was found inside MacDonald’s car, Emery said.

Adding to the suspicions of the police, the Massachusetts man performed poorly on field sobriety tests and at one point fell against a wall for support, Emery reported.

MacDonald appeared to be intelligent, talking with Emery on topics ranging from the Vietnam war to current computer operating systems, but he also claimed to traveling the world undercover as a CIA operative and serving as a code encryption expert uncovering terrorists, according to Emery.

In one instance, Emery warned MacDonald about the rigid plastic seats in the back of the cruiser, only to be told that MacDonald found them more comfortable that the seats he was accustomed to in “Palestine.”
