BANGOR – A Brewer man found innocent of a reported robbery last year was indicted Monday on charges of robbery and firearms violations in connection with an incident in January.

Jeffrey Simpson, 36, of Brewer, whom authorities have described as a career criminal, was one of 38 people indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury, which met in Bangor on Monday.

The grand jury indicted Simpson on charges of robbery, burglary and two counts of reckless conduct with a firearm in connection with an incident in late January when it was reported he forced his way into a Bangor apartment and demanded money from people at gunpoint. A woman told police that Simpson held the gun flush to her head to get money from her.

Simpson has convictions in Connecticut dating to 1983 as well as felony convictions in Maine in the 1990s, according to a prosecutor.

But on Feb. 21, a Penobscot County jury found Simpson innocent of charges that he robbed two women at gunpoint in Hampden last summer. Wanted also in Bangor, Simpson was arrested in Houlton hours after the reported burglary in Hampden. During the trial, Simpson’s attorney raised questions about the police investigation and presented a witness who cast doubt on whether a gun was involved.
