Bangor

A 12-hour course in hydraulics will be offered March 11, 18, 25 and April 5 at Eastern Maine Technical College. The course is designed for those who operate or own a snowplow, wood splitter, compact tractor or other hydraulic equipment. The costs is $50. For information or registration, call 941-4621.

Glenburn

Dr. Isabelle S. Selassie has opened a psychiatric practice of holistic health care in Glenburn for adults, children and adolescents. Services are available individually or in small groups.

Programs she offers include “Take Charge of Your Life;” “Constructive Approaches;” “Skills for Success Seminar,” eight sessions over four or eight weeks; and “Relaxation Training Workshop,” four sessions over two to four weeks.

Hampden

The Kiwanis Club of Hampden held an appreciation supper for the Hampden Public Safety Department’s police, fire and ambulance personnel, and their spouses, Feb. 21 at the Kiwanis Civic Center.

Proposed by longtime Kiwanis member Dennis Whitcomb, the dinner was intended to make sure the public safety employees knew their service and sacrifices were appreciated. Club President Vivian Gresser presented a plaque to be hung in the department’s new building on Western Avenue. Past Lt. Gov. Jane Newbury quizzed Kiwanis members about the organization as a means to educate members and guests.

Senior citizens in Hampden are invited to a luncheon and concert at noon Friday, March 22, at Weatherbee School. The lunch menu will be pork roast and gravy, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, applesauce, yeast roll and blueberry cake. The third grade will perform a concert afterward. Those who wish to attend should make reservations by calling 862-3254 before March 15.

Hermon

Child Development Services and the Hermon School Department will sponsor a free developmental screening for 3- and 4-year-olds, as well as 5-year-olds not yet eligible for kindergarten, 9 a.m.-noon March 14, at Hermon Elementary School. For an appointment, call 947-8493, Ext. 10.

Holden

Maine Audubon’s Fields Pond Nature Center will offer a St. Patrick’s Day Nature Walk at 2 p.m. March 17, at the center at 216 Fields Pond Road. Judy Markowsky, director of the center, will lead the walk with the theme, “Think Green.” Evergreen trees and plants will be the topic. The cost is $4 for members, $5 for non-members.

Milford

The Friends of Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge are compiling a history of Sunkhaze. The project will include an account of how and why the refuge was established in 1988, and personal stories and photos from people who have had interesting experiences there.

Once completed, Fern Stearns said, the booklet will be made available to students and others who wish to enrich their enjoyment of Sunkhaze Meadows.

Old Town

Volunteers will be calling Old Town and Orono residents Saturday morning, March 9, during the annual phone-athon to benefit the Animal Orphanage shelter and its services. Pledges will be used to support the agency’s spay and neuter fund.

All kittens and puppies born at the shelter, plus adult cats and dogs, are spayed or neutered as part of the adoption process.

The phone-athon, conducted with the assistance of MBNA, will take place between 9 a.m. and noon. People also may contribute by calling 866-0753, a designated line the morning of March 9, or by sending a donation to the Animal Orphanage, P.O. Box 163, Old Town 04468. All donations go to the direct care of the animals.

Newburgh

The Small Street Journal will not be published in March. The newspaper for children will return in April. It will be available at the Newburgh Town Office and at some stores in Bangor.
