PRINCESS ANNE, Md., – The University of Maine baseball team got its 2002 season started in a big way by outscoring the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 48-2 to sweep a day-night doubleheader on Saturday.

The Black Bears won the opener 23-2 and then took the nightcap 25-0 as the Hawks committed 16 errors.

In the first game, Mike Ross smacked a home run, and drove in four runs. Mike Livulpi, Simon Williams, Joe Drapeau, Alain Picard, and Aaron Young also homered for the 1-0 Black Bears. Williams went 4 for 4, driving in three runs. Mike Collar had 11 strikeouts – five on called third strikes – and allowed two hits in five innings of work.

In the second game, Joe Drapeau homered in a six-run fourth and Adam Young tripled to start the threat to help 2-0 Maine pull away. The Hawks committed eight errors during a 16-run UMaine fifth. Rich Laganiere notched the shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 hitters.

At Lake Wales, Fla., Keith Simmons’ two-run single and Craig Harvey’s RBI single highlighted a four-run first inning which carried Husson past Evangel University of Springfield, Mo., on Saturday.

Josh Dubay, a freshman from Waterville making his first collegiate start, went the distance for the win. He gave up six hits, struck out seven, and walked none.

Josh Ferguson opened the game with a double for the Braves of Bangor.

Mike Triska led Evangel with two singles and an RBI. Starter Tim Gatlin took the loss.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps Fisher

The Saint Joseph’s College Monks beat Fisher College of Bangor 6-0 and 11-5 in games in Florida over the weekend. Jessie Lacasse paced St. Joe’s in the first game with two home runs and four RBIs. Jerret Shaffer allowed only four hits while striking out five to earn the win.

Brad Wheaton earned the victory for St. Joe’s in the second game as he allowed only five hits and one earned run. Howard Rutherford had three hits.

Women’s hockey

Providence 5, Maine 3

At Providence, Melanie Ruzzi knocked in two goals to lead the Friars past the Black Bears in the ECAC quarterfinals.

Rush Zimmerman dished out three assists for 18-13-4 Providence. Danielle Culgin and Danielle Bourgette also added goals. Amy Quinlan made 12 saves.

Jamie Hill, Cheryl White and Cindy Biron lit the lamp for the 16-15-4 Black Bears. Tristan Desmet and Laura Maddin handed out an assist. Lara Smart stopped 29 shots.

Softball

Maine wins two

At Osceola, Fla., the University of Maine improved to 4-3 with victories over Pennsylvania and Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne Sunday.

In the first game, Candace Jaegge shut out Fort Wayne as she allowed only three hits while striking out seven and walking only one. Leigh Ann Hlywak cranked a home run and drove in three runs and Lindsay Tibbetts singled twice and doubled.

Jennifer Merchant turned in another fine pitching performance for the Bears in the second game as she gave up only three hits without allowing a walk in five innings. Hlywak again paced the Bears as she hit another home run and drove in three runs. Erica Sobel chipped in with a solo home run.
