Sunday morning blaze damages Medway home

MEDWAY – A Medway family was left homeless Sunday when a fire badly damaged their mobile home, located in the Old Farm Trailer Park.

Fire Chief Peter Noddin said no people were injured in the fire reported at 11:21 a.m. Sunday at the home of Zelma Rudge. But the family’s dog and cat were killed.

The chief said the fire appeared to have started in the master bedroom. Noddin said the fire may have been caused by an overheated electrical cord. He has called investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office to assist the department in determining the cause.

Noddin said Rudge walked down the hall to get something when she saw smoke coming from the end of the trailer, near the bedrooms. He said Rudge got her 13-year-old daughter and ran to a neighbor’s home to call the fire department.

The chief said smoke was coming out of the building all the way around when firefighters arrived.

“We got a crew in the hallway down toward the bedroom when the fire flashed and ran into the attic over their heads,” said Noddin. “They ended up with fire behind them. At that point, I ordered them out of the building and we knocked the fire down from outside of the building.”

Noddin said the rear portion of the roof caved in. He said the trailer and its contents were a “total loss.” He had no estimates of damage and was not sure whether Rudge has insurance.

More than 20 Medway, East Millinocket and Mattawamkeag firefighters brought the fire under control within 30 minutes, said the chief. Firefighters worked for nearly two hours to completely extinguish it.
