Teen-ager leads police on car chase 15-year-old Corinna boy arrested after eluding cruisers from 7 agencies

BANGOR – A 15-year-old Corinna boy believed to be driving a stolen car led police from seven law enforcement agencies on a chase Sunday that began in Bangor and ended more than an hour later in Newport, spanning two counties.

The youth, whose name was withheld because of his age, was arrested without incident by state police about 9:30 p.m. after he finally pulled off Interstate 95 at Newport. It was not clear Sunday night what he would be charged with.

The chase ended near the intersection of Routes 2 and 7. Police believe the boy was trying to get to his home in Corinna.

Though not a high-speed chase – speeds rarely exceeded 60 mph – the teen-ager put other motorists at risk when he drove on the wrong side of the road at times, according to police. The incident resulted in no injuries or accidents, police said.

Police from Bangor, Veazie, Orono, Hampden and Newport, the Maine State Police and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department participated in the effort to stop the teen-ager. Despite the presence of police cruisers and spike mats, the young motorist kept going until he reached Newport. By the time he did, he had lost the rubber on three of the tires of the car he was driving.

Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber and Officer Allen Woolley said the pursuit – or escort – included up to five cruisers at any given time.

According to Weber and Woolley, the episode began about 8:30 p.m. on State Street, when Officer Dan Herrick saw the youth driving erratically and followed him. The teen-ager, however, failed to stop for Herrick and a pursuit began that led police on Route 2 through Veazie and Orono, before the youth got onto the interstate and headed south.

At some point, police apparently were able to contact the teen-ager’s family, though it was not clear immediately after the arrest how police knew who his family members were.

The blue older model Ford Escort station wagon he was driving is believed to have been stolen. Police had been on the lookout for the car and the youth in connection with the theft of beer from a Glenburn store.
