Cony senior Jauna Andrews scored 12 points in the first half of Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class A championship game against defending state champion Nokomis of Newport.

She only had four points in the second half, but the 6-foot-1 forward-center had bigger things to worry about. Andrews was the catalyst in holding the Warriors’ top offensive player to two field goals.

And for that, Andrews has been named the 2002 Bangor Daily News’ Owen Osborne Most Valuable Player for the Eastern Maine Class A tournament.

“Jauna [had] an outstanding year,” Rams coach Paul Vachon said after Cony of Augusta topped Nokomis of Newport 48-39 in the EM final.

Andrews, along with Rams teammates Ashley Underwood and Katie Rollins, Nokomis’ Danielle Clark and Hampden’s Megan Magoon have been named to the Eastern Maine Class A All-Tournament Team.

Underwood and Clark are the only repeat selections from last year’s all-tourney team.

It always seems that when the Cony girls win, voters have trouble choosing just one of the Rams as the MVP – a different player seems to come to the fore in each game – and this year was no different. Three different Cony players received nods.

The MVP award was established in 1994 in memory of Osborne, a former NEWS sports editor and reporter. The award and all-tourney teams are selected by a vote of media, tourney officials and representatives of the Maine Principals’ Association.

Andrews got the honor as one of two senior starters on the team. She averaged 15.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and two blocked shots in three tournament games.

She is the first Cony player to receive the Osborne award since Janet Riese in 1998 and the fourth Cony MVP since the award was first given out in 1994.

Andrews had her biggest game, statistics-wise, in the quarterfinal. She put in 22 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had three blocks, two assists and a steal. She led the Rams with 16 points in the EM final, going 8-for-12 from the field, and on the defensive end was responsible for guarding Clark in the second half of the game. Andrews was 23-for-38 (60.5 percent) in the tournament.

Underwood, a junior guard-forward, averaged 13 points, two rebounds and 3.3 assists in three games. She came up big in the Eastern Maine final, in which she went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Rollins is the first Cony freshman to be named to the all-tourney team since Julie Veilleux in 1997.

The center averaged 13 points and 10.6 rebounds and, combined with Andrews, the two were almost unstoppable in the post. They gave the Rams, who are traditionally a guard-based offense, the biggest height advantage they’ve had in years.

Rollins’ father David was named to the all-tourney team in 1972 and 1973, his junior and senior years at Cony.

Warriors junior Clark, last year’s Class A Osborne winner, returns to the all-tourney team with a 15.3-point, 6-rebound-per-game average. The forward was 18-for-22 from the foul line in three games and her 23-point quarterfinal was the highest scoring game of anyone in the tournament.

Magoon, a Hampden senior guard, had the highest scoring average of the all-tourney team members with 19 ppg in two games. She also averaged five rebounds in leading the Broncos to the semifinals.
