Rockport homeowners catch 3 young burglars

ROCKPORT – The residents of a home on Russell Avenue interrupted a burglary at their home Saturday evening and held the three juveniles there until police arrived.

Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley said Officer Michael Jarrett was summoned to the home at about 6 p.m., soon after the owners arrived home to find the three boys inside. The boys did not have to be physically restrained by the homeowners, Kelley said Monday.

The boys, two 13-year-olds and a 12-year-old, who live in Rockport, Rockland and Hope, were taken into custody. During interviews with their parents present, the boys confessed to two other burglaries and two incidents of vandalism, Kelley said.

The boys gained entrance to the home using a small pry bar, he said.

Last week, on two separate nights, windows were smashed at the Midcoast Solid Waste Corp. facility and at the construction site of the Penobscot Bay YMCA.

At two other homes in the village area the boys took a variety of small items, the chief said, including electronic devices. They also set off a fire extinguisher inside a car at one of the homes, and damaged a tractor.

“There’s a fair amount of damage done,” Kelley said.

The 12-year-old was charged with burglary, theft and aggravated criminal mischief. One of the 13-year-olds was charged with possession of burglary tools, burglary, theft and aggravated criminal mischief. The other 13-year-old was charged with burglary, theft, criminal trespass and possession of a usable amount of marijuana. The boys were taken to the juvenile detention facility in Charleston, and are expected to appear before a judge today.
