Bangor
The Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra and String and Wind ensembles performed in concert Sunday at Ellsworth High School.
The String Ensemble is directed by Cassandra Haynes, a graduate of the Youth Orchestra and music education major at the University of Maine.
Charles Kadyk, principal violist of the Colby Symphony, conducted the orchestra, and Arnold Poland conducted the Wind Ensemble.
The orchestra and ensembles comprise more than 75 youngsters, ages 7 to 17, from northern, eastern and central Maine.
St. Joseph Healthcare and Union Street Brick Church are sponsoring a Passion play at 7 p.m. March 21-23 and 28-30 at the church on the corner of Union and Main streets. The community theater production depicts the last days of Jesus’ life, and his Resurrection.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and children under 12. Purchase tickets at Patrick’s Hallmark, Broadway, or make reservations by calling 945-9798.
Kevin Mooney, representing Shaw’s Supermarket on Springer Drive, presented a check for $515 to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter recently.
Accepting the donation was Margaret Baillie, president of the board for BAHS.
At Eastern Maine Medical Center, Joel Cranford has been named media supervisor for the Education and Training Center. He previously worked for ProQuest in Ann Arbor, Mich., and was Web master for Bangor Hydro-Electric Co.
Kevin LaPoint, employed in Sterile Processing and Distribution, has passed the examination for certified sterile processing and distribution technician.
CM Weston, a Bangor-based creative service and marketing firm, has been chosen by the town of Bucksport to develop marketing strategy for the town’s new business and technology parks – Buckstown Heritage Park and Horizon Business and Technology Park.
Cary Weston established CM Weston in June 2001.
David Brown, photographer and owner of Northstar Photography in Bangor, has been elected second vice president of the Maine Professional Photographers Association.
The annual convention was held last month in Augusta.
Peoples Heritage Bank has promoted two area residents:
. Allen L. Campbell of Brewer, to vice president. He will continue to manage business development and sales at 77 Exchange St., Bangor. He joined Peoples in 1994 and has 15 years’ experience in Bangor.
He previously served as a mortgage originator and branch manager. Campbell is a member of the government affairs committee of the Bangor Area Chamber of Commerce, and is vice chairman of the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also serves on the Brewer Planning Board.
. David J. Smallwood of Holden, to assistant vice president in the mortgage department. He will continue to manage the residential mortgage loan department at 77 Exchange St., Bangor. A 1986 graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, he joined Peoples in 1996 and has seven years’ experience in banking. He previously served as a loan consultant and senior loan officer. He serves on the Bangor Board of Realtors.
As U.S. Cellular’s Community Action Recycling Effort program enters its final month, the company encourages Bangor residents to participate.
Now through March 31, each wireless phone brought to any U.S. Cellular retail store or authorized agent location will benefit the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, a program of the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of America. The phones need not be in working order.
The fund will provide provide educational assistance for postsecondary study to financially needy dependents of those killed or permanently disabled in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Rick and Alisha Ames held the grand opening and ribbon-cutting March 8 for Temple Health and Fitness. The new business is located at 190 Harlow St.
Brewer
The Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3177 is working on preparations for the New England Regional Convention, to be held in October in Brewer.
Dawn Quinn won the Best Chili Contest with her Salsa Chili. Gerry Smith placed second with Slow Burn Chili. Grace Carr was third with Avalanche Chili.
Activities held during March will raise funds for cancer research.

Corinth
The Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth has announced a scholarship available to students from Corinth pursuing post-secondary education.
The application deadline for the Myron B. Foster Scholarship is Monday, March 18. For information, contact the Central High School guidance office.
Kenduskeag
The Kenduskeag Recreation Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the municipal building. New people are welcome, said Tina Byers, a member of the committee.
Orono
Several Orono High School students in Christopher Luthin’s contemporary issues class assisted with a Meet the Candidates night March 5 in the municipal building.

Veazie
Veazie Parks and Recreation is looking for teams of seventh- and eighth-grade boys to scrimmage on Saturday mornings with Veazie’s basketball travel team of same ages.

Meredith Crawford of Veazie, a freshman at Orono High School, will be the featured soloist during three performances of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra March 18 at the Maine Center for the Arts, on the University of Maine campus in in Orono.
A total of more than 4,000 youngsters will attend the performances.
