AUGUSTA – Senior Airman Peter L. Small of Old Town was named the Maine Air National Guard Outstanding Airman of the Year for 2001 during ceremonies March 3 at Camp Keyes in Augusta.

Airman Small is assigned to the Aircraft Generation Squadron as a KC-135 flight-line mechanic at the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor.

He is pursuing a master’s degree in financial economics from the University of Maine, and also is enrolled in the Community College of the Air Force and Airman Leadership School.

Airman Small is employed by the University of Maine as a graduate assistant in the economics department where he tutors students and grades papers. He also owns a part-time lawn care business.

He is a 1992 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, and a 1999 graduate of the University of Maine with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. His military awards include the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Air Force Training Ribbon.

Airman Small is co-chairman of the Missions and Evangelism Committee at the Pilgrim Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Bangor, and is a sponsor of the senior high youth group.
