Sixth-grader Joseph Moore tied for second in the St. Mary’s Winter Warm-up Chess Tournament held recently at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
Sales at The Attic raised $6,700 for All Saints Catholic School during December. The store on Center Street is looking for donations of yarn, books, blankets, sheets, knickknacks and dishes.

Eastern Maine Technical
College
BANGOR – Eastern Maine Technical College nursing students who took the National Council Licensure Examination for the first time came in first among Maine schools, with a passing rate of 95.8 percent.
According to Suzanne Brunner, director of the EMTC Nursing Program, EMTC has a two-year nursing program with extensive practical experience. Both two-year and four-year program nursing graduates took the exam.
The statistics, for the year Oct. 1, 2000-Sept. 30, 2001, compared EMTC scores to 14 other programs throughout Maine. The average passing rate in Maine was 82.3 percent, and the national average was 85.4 percent.
Brunner said the EMTC students have placed consistently at the top for first-time exam takers for the past five years.
Alumni of EMTC’s Beta Beta Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa are organizing their first Alumni Association.
Phi Theta Kappa is the two-year College International Honor Society. The association will be involved in assisting the local chapter at EMTC in achieving the four hallmarks of the society: scholarship, service, leadership and fellowship. It is the only Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association in Maine. For information, contact Bonny at 278-2331.
EMTC and the Department of Economic Development’s Energy Conservation Division will hold a workshop on photovoltaic systems 1-5 p.m. March 26 at Rangeley Hall, Sylvan Road.
The program on this innovative alternative energy resource will be led by Blair Trump and Chris May, founders of SolarWinds Northern Lights of Waldoboro and California. The cost is $30. Register by March 20 by calling 941-4621.
Emory University
ATLANTA – Stephanie Jenkins of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list of Emory College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Jenkins.
Maine Maritime Academy
CASTINE – Midshipman Kyle D. Meehan of Brewer was recognized by Maine Maritime Academy for superior performance in the college’s cadet shipping program.
A graduate of Brewer High School, Meehan completed his cadet shipping assignment aboard the Constellation, operated by Maersk Line Ltd., Norfolk, Va. He is a marine engineering operations major in the Class of 2003.
Those honored presented superior summary projects and received outstanding evaluations from professional seafaring officers.
Students pursuing an officer’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard as a third mate or third assistant engineer are required to train at sea during a portion of each of their first three years in college.
