BAR HARBOR – Craft items from all of Maine’s American Indian tribes are featured in the Abbe Museum Shop. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays.
The shop is best known for its large selection of baskets created by Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac and Maliseet artists, as well as a wide range of other authentic Maine native crafts. The shop is a major outlet for the work of native artists in the state, and also provides operating funds for the Abbe and supports the museum’s education mission.
In addition to baskets woven of brown ash and sweet grass, the crafts on sale include etched birch-bark containers and boxes decorated with dyed porcupine quills. Traditional woodcarving is represented by root clubs and walking sticks, while flutes are available in cedar, cherry and tiger maple.
The Abbe Museum and Museum Shop are located at 26 Mount Desert St., across from Bar Harbor’s village green.
