Permit deadline for moose hunt is April 1 Forms available at sporting goods stores

AUGUSTA – Those who want to hunt moose in the state of Maine are reminded that the deadline for moose permit applications is April 1.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than midnight April 1 or delivered to Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters at 284 State Street in Augusta by 5 p.m. on April 1.

Applications are available at license agents and sporting goods stores throughout the state as well as the DIF&W Regional Headquarters and Augusta offices.

The published dates for the moose hunting season this year are Oct. 7-12 in Wildlife Management Districts 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 18, 28 and 29.

There will also be a split season in Wildlife Management Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 11 and 19. The published dates are week 1: Sept. 23-28; week 2: Oct. 7-12.

A legal bulletin was published in daily newspapers Wednesday advertising the published season dates and that will result in the formal adoption of the dates.

Perry to lead wildlife forum

The DIF&W, along with the National Wildlife Federation and Maine Audubon, is sponsoring a Wildlife Forum March 20 at the University of Maine-Farmington.

Topics will include the management of nongame and endangered wildlife and the role of non-consumptive wildlife enthusiasts in Maine. There will also be an open question-and-answer segment.

Speakers at the forum will include DIF&W Commissioner Lee Perry, DIF&W Director of Resource Management Ken Elowe and DIF&W Endangered/Threatened Species Group Leader Mark McCollough.

Attendees will also be able to fill out a survey on nongame species issues that will aid in the development of future DIF&W programs, as well as learn more about conserving biodiversity within the state.

This will be the first in a series of forums throughout the state. This forum begins at 7 p.m. in Room C of the North Dining Hall in UMF Student Center.

Sportsmen’s Show March 22-24

A grand outdoor tradition will continue next week when the Penobscot County Conservation Association hosts its 64th Sportsmen’s Show at the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Exhibits, displays and demonstrations will be held at UMaine’s field house, Memorial Gym and Wallace Pool from March 22-24. Show times are: March 22, 5-9 p.m.; March 23, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and March 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults while there is no charge for children under 12 accompanied by an adult.

The show will feature more than 100 exhibitors of canoes, fishing and fly-tying equipment, hunting dogs, trapping, taxidermy, boat and marine supplies, ATVs, firearms, bowhunting, family camping and backpacking.
