Reichley spearheads Bears’ win over Penn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mark Reichley stroked a double and three singles Friday night to spearhead an 18-hit attack as the University of Maine cruised to an 18-7 baseball victory over Pennsylvania at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Mike Ross knocked in four runs with a three-run home run and a single, while Matt Reynolds hit a triple and a single good for three RBIs. Simon Williams of Portland provided a triple, a single, and two RBIs, while Aaron Young of Augusta and Mike Ferriggi doubled and singled for the Bears.

“I thought we swung the bat a little bit better tonight,” UMaine coach Paul Kostacopoulos told WZON radio. “The matchup was favorable for us tonight. I thought our starter was better than their starter.”

Junior lefthander Rich Laganiere picked up his second win of the young season, allowing four hits and three runs in five innings of work. Greg Creek of Chelsea, Aaron Smith, and Adam Labelle combined to allow only five hits over the final four innings, but the Bears fell apart in the field, committing four errors in the last three innings.

“The last four innings were just not good. We fell asleep,” Kostacopoulos said.

Mike Goldblatt tripled and singled and Jon Slaughter doubled and singled for the Quakers, who committed six errors.

The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run triple to right-center by Williams, who stole three bases in the game. UMaine made it 4-0 in the third when Williams walked with one out, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bears broke the game open with four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth. Reynolds’ two-run triple keyed the fourth-inning rally, while Ross’ three-run shot spearheaded the fifth.

Houston drilled a two-run double in the sixth for UMaine, which takes on Nebraska-Omaha here today at 2 p.m.
