Joe Drapeau of Biddeford collected six hits and drove in four runs over the weekend as the University of Maine piled up 36 hits while beating Nebraska-Omaha Saturday and downing Iowa on Sunday.

The Black Bears posted a 12-3 victory over Nebraska-Omaha and pulled away for an 11-3 win over the Hawkeyes.

On Saturday, Drapeau stroked a two-run double in the seventh inning and belted a two-run home run in the ninth to help UMaine prevail and improve to 7-1. He also hit another double in the game.

Freshman Scott Robinson, making his first collegiate start, scattered six hits and three runs over six innings to get the win. Greg Creek of Chelsea pitched two innings of one-hit relief and Ryan Harris allowed one hit in his inning of work to preserve the win.

Leadoff man Mike Livulpi and Alain Picard rapped three singles each in the Bears’ 17-hit attack, while Mark Reichley provided a two-run homer and a single and Mike Ross singled twice.

Spencer Doyle and Justin Cook provided two singles each for Nebraska-Omaha.

The Bears led 4-3 when they scored twice in the sixth. Mike Ferriggi singled and rode home on Reichley’s one-out homer.

UMaine added two runs in the seventh when Simon Williams of Portland walked, Ross singled and Drapeau hit a two-run double. The Bears piled on four runs in the eighth on a single by Ross and Drapeau’s two-run home run.

On Sunday, Ross’ solo homer sparked a three-run seventh inning as the Bears scored nine times in the last three frames.

Ross also stroked a two-run homer in the eighth and singled for UMaine. Livulpi hit four singles, Drapeau provided a double and two singles and Reichley singled three times for the winners.

Williams belted a three-run homer and a single as the Bears amassed 19 hits.

Mike MacDonald of Camden allowed six hits and two earned runs in six innings before giving way to Adam Labelle, who earned the victory with three innings of one-hit shutout relief.

Kyle Thousand paced Iowa with a triple, a double and two singles.

UMaine trailed 3-2 when it regained the lead in the seventh. Ross smacked a one-out homer to left to tie it, then Drapeau and Picard ripped back-to-back doubles. Matt Reynolds walked and eventually scored on an error.

The Bears went up 7-3 in the eighth when Livulpi singled with one out and trotted home on Ross’ two-run home run to right field.

UMaine added four in the ninth with Livulpi’s RBI single and a three-run homer by Williams the key blows.

The Bears return to action in tonight’s 7 o’clock game at Florida A&M in Tallahassee.

St. Norbert sweeps Husson

At Lakeland, Fla., Leo Trapanier scored Jeff Koehl with a one-out single in the ninth inning, lifting St. Norbert College of Le Pere, Wis., to a sweep of its Saturday doubleheader against Husson of Bangor.

The Green Knights won the second game 7-6 after blanking the Braves 7-0 in the opener.

In Game 1, Rex Nadeau combined with two teammates on a six-hit shutout. Reed Olsen hit two singles with three RBIs for St. Norbert and Tom Kallbask had an RBI triple.

John McGlinn singled twice for Husson behind loser Travis Reynolds.

In the second game, Koehl was hit by a pitch, advanced on a sacrifice and scored on Trepanier’s single to pace the Knights.

Kallbask led St. Norbert with a double, two singles and an RBI. Mike Lesandremi hit a two-run home run in the third inning.

Craig Harvey spearheaded Husson with a solo homer in the second, a grand slam in the fifth, and a run-scoring double in the seventh. Harvey hit six homers with 14 RBIs last week.

Josh Ferguson singled twice.

Softball

Maine tops CSU, loses to Austin Peay

At Osceola, Fla., on Saturday, the University of Maine opened with a 3-2 win over Colorado State, then dropped a 1-0 decision to Austin Peay.

In the opener, Jennifer Merchant spread out eight hits and knocked in a run with a single to lead the 9-8 Black Bears to victory over Colorado State.

Sara Asadoorian and Katherine Churchill each singled twice for UMaine and Aliesha Rautenberg and Leigh Ann Hlywak doubled.

Amanda Kocis doubled and singled to pace the Rams.

In the second game, Jenny Kelley knocked in the game’s lone run in the first inning to lead Austin Peay to victory. Kelley doubled and singled behind Holly Ricketts, who pitched a seven-hitter.

Nicole Taylor and Merchant combined to allow only six hits for the Bears. Merchant singled twice and Hlywak added a double.
