YORK – A group that led the fight against video gambling two years ago and one that’s just been formed are combining forces in opposition to a proposed Indian casino in the Kittery area.
The new group, Casinos No! planned to gather Sunday at the York Beach Firehouse for its first meeting.
Leaders of the second group, known as No Dice: Mainers Against A Dishonest Deal, were invited to a rally with the other anti-casino group Sunday.
No Dice spearheaded a successful campaign in 2000 against a proposal to allow video gambling at Scarborough Downs harness racetrack.
The Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribes want to build a $500 million casino in Kittery. Supporters took their plan to the Legislature, but announced last Monday they would hold off pursuing their plan until next year.
Gov. Angus King, who strongly opposes casinos, will be out of office when the next Legislature meets.
Mark Robinson, spokesman for No Dice, said membership in the group has more than doubled since the tribes made public their proposal for a casino in Kittery.
Casino supporters have said the casino would pour $100 million annually into the state treasury.
