MACHIAS – Two 18-year-old Washington County members of the McDonald’s East-West Senior All-Stars girls basketball team, including the valedictorian of Narraguagus High School, have been arrested and charged with burglarizing a Princeton home earlier this month.

Morgan Drew of Calais, a senior at Calais High School, and Sarah Snider of Milbridge, valedictorian of her 2002 graduating class at the Harrington school, are charged in connection with the March 6 burglary of a home on the Pokey Road in Princeton.

Lt. Michael Riggs, one of two Washington County deputies who investigate drug cases, confirmed Monday that the department is conducting an investigation of Snider in connection with alleged illegal importation of prescription narcotics from Canada to the United States.

He declined to elaborate, and Washington County District Attorney Michael Povich said the report from the Sheriff’s Department has been submitted to his office and is under review.

Sgt. Kelly Barbee of the Maine State Police said the two women are accused of stealing cash and personal household items, including electronics. Some of those items have been recovered and Barbee said other people may be charged with receiving stolen goods.

Barbee said the women were arrested on the felony burglary charge Thursday. They are free on cash bail and are scheduled to appear in 4th District Court in Calais on May 7.

In a separate incident, Baileyville Police Chief Philip Harriman said Monday that his department summoned Drew on March 11 on a charge of attempted theft by deception.

Harriman said Drew allegedly tried to cash an already cashed check at the Woodland Food Mart on March 7. The owner of the $40 check had written it to the market on Dec. 31, the chief said.

Harriman said Snider was waiting in her car in the store parking lot when Drew attempted to cash the check.

The chief said his department was not releasing the name of the person who owned the check because certain aspects of the incident are unclear.

A condition of the bail for Drew and Snider is that they have no contact with each other, with the exception of March 17, 22 and 23, dates related to their basketball activities.

Drew and Snider are members of the Maine McDonald’s East/West Senior All-Star C/D East girls basketball team. March 17 was a practice session, and March 22 and 23 are the all-star banquet and championship game at Husson College in Bangor.

Jim Ray, president of the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches, which co-sponsors the all-star games with McDonald’s Corp. restaurants, said Monday that the association is looking into the situation, but won’t make a decision on whether Drew and Snider can play until the association has more definitive information.

Peter Doak, principal of Narraguagus High School, said Monday that he first learned of Snider’s arrest on Sunday evening. School administrators and school board members have had no official word on the arrest and are gathering more information before taking any action, Doak said.

Calais High School Principal James Underwood said Monday that the school had no comment on Drew’s arrest.

Drew and Snider, contacted at their homes on Monday afternoon, declined to comment on the charges.
