AUGUSTA – Mainers may get a chance to sport lobsters on their license plates – and bears if they choose.

A bill, LD 2009, endorsed by the Senate on Wednesday puts into place special requirements before one of the specialty license plates could be issued.

Money from sale of the lobster plates would go to lobster research. Scholarships for University of Maine students would be funded through sales of Maine Black Bears plates.

The bill faces further House and Senate votes.
