Teachers honored

AUGUSTA – Three local teachers are among 23 nominated for 2003 Maine Teacher of the Year, a program run by the State Board of Education and sponsored by Hannaford Bros. The winner will be named in September.

. Richard D. Glueck, sixth-grade science and social studies, Orono Middle School.

. Lauree E. Gott, middle school science and math, Veazie Community School.

. William J. LoPotro, college preparatory and advanced placement biology, Brewer High School.

AUGUSTA – Through SEED, Spreading Educator-to-Educator Developments, 75 Maine teachers have been recognized for developing ways to use technology to help students achieve Maine’s Learning Results. Area teachers are:

. Catherine Davis-Tilton and Kimberly Saucier, Central Middle School, Corinth, “International Space Station.”

. Kimberly Haggan and Jane Harburger, Reeds Brook Middle School, Hampden, “Kid-to-Kid Connection: Maine to South America.”

Brewer High School

Brewer Project Graduation will hold a yard sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Pendleton Street School.

Clothing and other donations may be dropped off from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 22. Raffle tickets at $1 each, or six for $5, are available on an Old Town Otter kayak, paddle and life vest. Proceeds will benefit a chem-free party for seniors on graduation night.

Jessica Maquillan, a senior at Brewer High School, is the recent winner of a Nelnet Superloan Scholarship of $1,000.

Maquillan, the daughter of Barbara McIntire of Eddington, will attend St. Joseph’s College in Standish next fall and plans to study to elementary education. Maquillan enjoys music and is in her high school chorus. She also is an intern in a second-grade classroom at her local elementary school.

Superloan will award 17 $1,000 scholarships between Feb. 1 and June 1. Applicants apply online at Superloan’s college planning Web site, www.superloan.com. The scholarship drawing is open to any Maine high school senior planning to attend college in the fall or newly admitted adult learners. Participants must be enrolled full time or part time at an accredited higher learning institution.

Hampden Academy

The 24-member Hampden Academy Jazz Ensemble will make its national debut at the Cosmic Rays Starlight Caf? next month during Disney World’s Magic Music Days in Orlando, Fla. The group is directed by Patrick Michaud. High school bands from throughout the country competed via videotape for the opportunity to perform at the National Music Festival in Florida.

Cameraman and sound engineer for the ensemble was Jim Chase of Winterport. He is the father of trombonist Ian Chase and a principal of Three Sons’ Music Recording Studio.

In Orlando, the band will assemble on an underground stage and rise through the floor to the performance area of the caf?. The musicians also will compete with other jazz bands for national standing at MusicFest Orlando.

To help pay travel costs, the Hampden Academy Jazz Ensemble will host a coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, in the old gym at the academy. Entertainment will include folk music, light jazz, poetry and a variety of performances.

Penobscot Christian School

kindergarten screening

BANGOR – Penobscot Christian School will hold kindergarten screening from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 2, at 1423 Ohio St. For an appointment, call 947-2704.

A prerequisite for enrollment is for at least one parent to be a member of a Bible-believing church. PCS is a parent-sponsored, nondenominational school for preschool through grade eight. Applications are now being accepted for all grades for the 2002-2003 school year.

Colby College

WATERVILLE – Christopher Blier of Hermon has been named to the dean’s list for fall 2001 at Colby College. A government major, he is the son of Alan and Susan Blier.

Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College has named its College Scholars for academic excellence for the 2001 fall term:

. Bangor: Brooke E. Hayes, daughter of Robert and Diane Regan Hayes.

. Orono: Christine S. Lambert, daughter of Susan J. Hunter and David H. Lambert; Adam B. Sewall, son of Douglas and Katherine Bieber Sewall.

University of Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Adam Edward Porter of Bangor has been named to the University of Delaware’s dean’s list for the fall 2001 semester. He is a senior in the university’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

University of Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Edward Thomas Stone of Veazie has graduated with a master of science degree in physics in the University of Wisconsin’s midyear commencement.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Heather K. Blier of Christiansburg, Va., has been named to the dean’s list for fall 2001 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. A doctoral student in clinical psychology, she is the daughter of Alan and Susan Blier of Hermon.

Northeast Technical Institute

BANGOR – Lisa Gabriele of Orono, Shane Whitmore of Brewer, Keith Moore of Hermon and David Edell of Etna have successfully graduated from Northeast Technical Institute and passed their commercial driver’s license examinations.
