TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State, the nation’s 20th-ranked team, battled its way to a 1-0 win over the University of Maine in the nightcap after prevailing 6-2 in the first game of a college softball doubleheader Wednesday.
In the first game, Jessica van der Linden rapped three hits and scored two runs as the Seminoles earned the win.
Erica Sobel doubled and scored for Maine, while Katherine Churchill singled and knocked in a run. Candace Jaegge allowed six hits, struck out four, and walked four.
In the second game, van der Linden had two hits and knocked in the game-winner in the third inning.
The Black Bears threatened to even the game in the fourth as they put two runners on with one out, but the Seminoles turned a double play off a Jenna Merchant infield smash and escaped. Merchant struck out three and walked one.
