10 years ago – March 21, 1992

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Ricky Craven of Newburgh ran a 90.599 mph lap Friday to capture the pole for Sunday’s 200-lap Busch Grand National portion of the Miller 500 Tripleheader.

“This is quite an accomplishment,” said Craven, whose race will be only his fifth on the Busch National Grand tour. “We’ve had situations earlier this year when we thought we could qualify a little better than we did, but things didn’t go together. Today was a good day for us.”

BANGOR – The Bangor City Council will hold a series of meetings Monday evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The panel will consider a couple of projects at the Bangor City Nursing Facility – the removal of a small amount of asbestos, and the construction of a 10-bed addition, to be built by Nickerson & O’Day at a cost of $387,736.

25 years ago – March 21, 1977

The University of Maine at Orono baseball team defeated Montclair State of New Jersey 12-4 on Saturday and Broward Community College of Miami 6-1 and 12-9 on Sunday to sweep its weekend games. The first game counted on the regular season record and lifted the team to 2-0, while the three weekend contests raised Maine’s overall record to 5-2.

ORONO – Judith Goodman will play viola in the Ithaca College String Orchestra’s spring concert on March 28. The program will include three movements from Mozart’s “Divertimento No. 1 in D Major-I-31.”

Miss Goodman, a freshman in music education, also plays viola in the larger college orchestra. She is the daughter of Mrs. Jean S. Goodman of 32 Myrtle St.

50 years ago – March 21, 1952

OLD TOWN- A YMCA group of fathers and sons of Old Town and Orono recently met at the home of Herbert Dickey Jr., Forest Avenue, and his son, Herbert III. Richard Willard conducted the council. Plans were discussed for future activity including an overnight hike to the camp of Dr. Eugene Ogden and son Everett. Games and refreshments were enjoyed.

Members of the Eastern Maine Rabbit Breeders’ Association will elect officers for the coming year when they meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the YWCA, Union Street, Bangor.

The monthly meeting of the association is open to everyone interested in rabbits, says President Fred Lovette of Thomaston. In addition to the election of officers, the meeting will feature a discussion of the spring rabbit shows.

100 years ago – March 21, 1902

ORONO – A college meeting was held Thursday morning directly after chapel for the purpose of seeing what could be done toward raising money for the spring track and baseball team. Athletic subscription papers had previously been passed around among the students, but an unsatisfactory number had affixed their names, pledging themselves to pay $5 for the support of spring athletics.

BANGOR – Thursday night until nearly 10 o’clock, while row boats glided high above the pavements of lower Broad Street and while thousands of Bangor’s honest citizens crowded the lower portion of the city to watch the broad Penobscot lashed to fury beneath its burden of heavy logs and floating ice, several hundred others gathered in City Hall, Undismayed by the storm and flood without, they listened to an interesting concert given in the best style of Pullen’s Symphony Orchestra.
