BREWER – Police searching a motel room Thursday night seized cocaine, heroin and prescription medications, arresting five people in the process.
Among those arrested were a Massachusetts man who drug agents are charging with trafficking drugs, and a Veazie man who earlier this month was charged with a state firearms violation that could be bumped up to a federal violation.
Based on information that drug sales were being conducted in Room 106 of the Twin City Motor Inn, agents of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency obtained a search warrant and with the assistance of Brewer police, entered the room Thursday night.
On Friday authorities were still assessing the amount and value of the seized drugs that included a large quantity of prescription pills, said Sgt. Garry Higgins, the MDEA supervisory special agent who heads up the regional drug task force. Also seized were syringes and other drug paraphernalia, he said.
Joseph LeFrancois, 40, of New Bedford, Mass., remained at Penobscot County Jail on Friday night on charges of possession of a Schedule W drug and violation of bail conditions, according to jail officials. Higgins said that charges against LeFrancois are in the process of being upgraded to aggravated trafficking in heroin. At the time of his arrest, LeFrancois was out on bail from a heroin arrest in Brewer early this year.
James Barriault, 30, whose Veazie home was searched less than a month ago by police who seized drugs and several firearms, was charged Thursday with possession of a Schedule W drug, crack cocaine and with violation of bail conditions. Higgins said the drug charge against Barriault is being upgraded to a furnishing cocaine charge.
Also, Darrell Dolliver, 32, and Amina Ashmore, 21, both of Bangor, were charged with possession of Schedule W drugs; and Cameron Brown, 27, of Winterport was charged with possession of heroin.
Higgins said that two other people were in the room at the time of the search warrant and that more charges may be filed.
