MPA Awards
BANGOR – Recipients of the Principal’s Award for the Maine Principals’ Association have been announced. The MPA honors luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Bangor Civic Center. The keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. John Baldacci.
Area recipients are:

Altrusa scholarships
The Altrusa Club of Bangor will award a $1,000 scholarship to a Maine woman enrolled in a degree program who has earned at least 15 credit hours in the following schools: University of Maine, Beal College, Eastern Maine Technical College, or University of Maine-Augusta at Bangor. Applications are available in the financial aid offices of these schools. Applications must be received by the scholarship committee by April 30.
The Altrusa Club also will award a $1,000 scholarship to a Maine woman enrolled in a degree-granting program at Husson College. Applications are available in the financial aid office of the college. Applications must be received by the scholarship committee by April 30.
Brewer High School
The Brewer High School Outdoor Education Program will hold a yard sale, rain or shine, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at Brewer High School in the cafeteria. Items include clothing, furniture, sporting goods, books and much more. To donate items, call BHS at 989-4140 and ask to speak with Mark Savage or Cindy McLaughlin to arrange for pickup or delivery.
There also will be a car wash, weather permitting, along with a place to donate returnable bottles and cans. Come and help make this our most successful fund-raiser ever.
New Mexico Military Institute
ROSWELL, N.M. – Cadet Christopher Patterson has been named to the fall superintendent’s list at New Mexico Military Institute. He is the son of Sally Patterson of Brewer.
Norwich University
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Joshua S. Frederik of Hermon has been named to the dean’s list at Norwich University. He is majoring in business administration and management.
Old Town kindergarten registration
The Old Town School Department will hold a second kindergarten registration date for children entering kindergarten in the fall. The event is only for those who did not register previously.
It will be held 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m. April 10, at the Elementary Education Office, basement of the Helen Hunt School, 47 South Brunswick St. Kindergarten screening will be held May 14-15, and children must be registered in order to participate in the screening process. Bring the child’s legal birth certificate and immunization records. For information, call Brenda at the Elementary Education office, 827-3932.
Orono High School
Meredith Crawford of Veazie, a freshman at Orono High School, was the featured soloist March 18 for three performances of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerts at the University of Maine’s Maine Center for the Arts.
A violinist who played Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E Minor,” Crawford earned the honor by winning the Annas-Cupp Award in the BSO High School Concerto Competition.
St. Mark’s School
SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Laura Frey of Dixmont, daughter of Michael and Cynthia Frey, has been named to the St. Mark’s School first semester honor roll.
Colleges
Alfred University
ALFRED, N.Y. – Kathryn J. Holland of Orono was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Alfred University. She is a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Eastern Maine Technical College
Two students from Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor were named to the All-Maine Academic Team by the Maine Technical College System. They are:
. Kendra L. Atwood, majoring in business management.
. Leona Lane, majoring in business management with a concentration in office administration.
Eastern Maine Technical College student George Rollins earned his second consecutive gold medal in carpentry at the VICA-Skills Competition March 15 at the United Technology Center in Bangor.
A graduate of Hampden Academy, he will attend his third national competition in June in Kansas City.
Grove City College
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Julie Hodson, majoring in English, has been named to the dean’s list for fall 2001 at Grove City College. A 2001 graduate of home schooling, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hodson of Bangor.
St. Michael’s College
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Emily Morse, daughter of Mark and Margaret Morse of Bangor, worked at a New York City soup kitchen Feb. 23-March Saint Michael’s College alternative spring break program.
Morse is a senior majoring in elementary education and psychology at the liberal arts Catholic college. She is a graduate of Bangor High School.
Morse and nine other St. Michael’s students volunteered at “God’s Love We Deliver,” a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that provides free nutritional support for people living with HIV and AIDS.
