ATHENS, Ga. – Ian Crocker of Portland smashed the American and NCAA records in the 100-yard butterfly Friday night at the NCAA men’s swimming championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. Crocker swims for the University of Texas.

The Cheverus of Portland graduate and 2000 Olympic gold medalist finished first in the fly with a time of 45.44 seconds, which bettered the American record of 45.70 he set in a preliminary race Friday morning. The old NCAA mark (45.59, 1998) was held by SMU’s Lars Frolander, who is from Sweden. Crocker’s time is also a pool record.
