BANGOR – Discount Mattress and Furniture of Scarborough will be opening next week in the long-vacant former Grant’s building on Broadway, and by the end of the summer, national clothing chain Abercrombie and Fitch will be opening a store in the Bangor Mall.

Discount Mattress and Furniture has signed a one-year lease on the red brick building next to McDonald’s and across from Broadway Shopping Center. The furniture company has an option to buy the building once the lease is up, according to Dan Wellington, code enforcement officer for the city of Bangor.

Terms of the lease were not available. The building had been posted on a commercial real estate Web site for $3 million.

“It’s less than that,” Wellington said.

Darrell Cyr of Discount Mattress and Furniture did not return a telephone call for comment Friday.

Wellington said Cyr has been working with the city to secure permits since March 12. Those permits were made final Friday, Wellington said.

Discount Mattress is planning to open next week even though it will not yet have started on renovations to the building, Wellington said. A grand opening event is being planned in a couple of months.

At Bangor Mall, manager Bruce Soper confirmed Friday that Abercrombie and Fitch has signed a lease to convert two stores into one and open by late summer.

Abercrombie and Fitch, which sells men’s and women’s casual wear targeted at shoppers of high school and college age, will occupy spaces currently leased by Foot Locker and Casual Corner. Soper said Foot Locker will move to another site in the mall and Casual Corner is in the process of going out of business.

Abercrombie and Fitch is a publicly traded company (NYSE: ANF) based in Ohio. It operates 492 stores, including 148 Abercrombie stores for children ages 7 to 14, and 35 Hollister Co. stores for 14- to 18-year-olds.
