Recently, as safety coordinator for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, I was teaching an outdoor education safety program at the Samuel Wagner School in Winterport. I was able to see first hand that patriotism was not dead in our schools.

A young man named Larry was bringing in the American Flag that he had just taken down from the flagpole. I asked him if he would like some help folding the flag. He said, “Sir, I know how to do this.” He said his teachers had shown him how to do this correctly. He proceeded, with me holding one end, to perfectly fold the flag properly into the finish of the tri-cornered hat.

Hats off to the Wagner School and principal Dale Williams and his fine teaching staff. What I saw made me proud of this fine young man and know that our future in Maine is secure.
