INS staff top-notch

While I agree with the editorial in general (“Immigration outrage,” BDN, March 28), I very much disagree that you made your criticism of the Immigration and Naturalization Service too sweeping. In my experience the people who staff the Bangor INS office are dedicated, effective and friendly. I would say the same about other INS officers from Portland, Boston and the central office for New England.

It is outrageous that nobody had the presence of mind to check the visa sent to Mohamed Atta. I have learned that at the time the INS decision was taken, before Sept. 11, there was no reason to deny the visa. Unexplained is the fact that it took six months for that decision to be sent to the contractor and for the contractor to send it out. But please don’t include everybody in your criticism.

I talked with the head of the Bangor office and explained that I have the highest regard for him and his staff. He sounded as though he had given up concerning the press. These people deserve our encouragement.
