HAMPDEN – Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church was to mark the opening of an addition to the church at 44 Kennebec Road with a consecration service Friday.
The Rev. Debra J. Hanson, pastor, said the space was added to the rear of the white-frame church. It includes a fellowship hall, kitchen, restrooms, space for more classrooms and better access, including an elevator, for the handicapped.
The former fellowship hall, on the ground floor of the main church, has been converted into offices and more classrooms.
The congregation, with roots dating from 1794, has about 270 members and two youth groups.
Invited to the consecration service were Bishop Susan Wolfe Hassinger of the United Methodist Church’s New England Conference and the Rev. Dr. Sylvanus Jackson, district superintendent for United Methodists in northern Maine.
